What would you do if the nearest toilet was across an international border? If you are staying at one specific room of the Hotel Arbez, then it would just mean walking from the bedroom in Switzerland and across the border to the rest room in France.
Well, so were we, when we first heard about the Hotel Arbez. This hotel is located on the Switzerland - France border, in the literal sense. It is not just close to the border, instead the border runs right through the hotel - in some rooms, right across the bed!!!
Hotel Arbez is the result of one man's ingeniousness. The man, Monsieur Ponthus, decided to take advantage of a singular point in the Treaty of Dappes, a treaty signed to redraw the France-Switzerland border and resolve a long-standing border dispute.
The point that made Monsieur Ponthus sit up and take notice, was related to the buildings that the new border would run through. According to the treaty, no building existing at the time of ratification, would be affected by the modification of the border.
Ponthus, smartly, took advantage of this point and quickly got an Alpine-styled building constructed in the time it took to ratify the treaty. The building ran through the border.
Initially, he used French side of the building as a brassiere and, on the Swiss side, he put up a grocery shop - he hoped to benefit from cross-border trade. Later on, Jules-Jean Arbeze bought it in 1921 and converted it into a hotel - and that's how Hotel Arbez came into being.
Interestingly, the hotel's cross-border structure has the stairs leading to the second floor beginning in France and ending in Switzerland; a kitchen split between two countries and even two guest rooms where the beds are positioned to let you sleep with your head in France and legs in Switzerland!
Which room would you choose? The one with beds straddling an international border or one where you have to cross an international border to access the rest room? Either ways, a stay at Hotel Arbez is bound to be an interesting stay.
Visit this hotel just for its history, unique positioning and quaint charm alone.
