Day 2: Istanbul

After breakfast, set out to explore Istanbul: visit attractions such as the Byzantine Hippodrome, a popular hangout for commoners and royals since time immemorial. Initially a venue for the famed chariot races, the Hippodrome was where everyone collected to cheer their favourite charioteers on during the Byzantine and Ottoman eras, and even for revolutions and protestations against the emperors.

As a centre of recreation, the hippodrome was exquisitely adorned with statues, columns and obelisks sourced from across the empire by each Sultan and emperor. Only some of these adornments remain today and the hippodrome now known as the Sultan Ahmet Square continues to a popular place for meetings and hangouts. Checkout the Kaiser Wilhelm’s Fountain, pink granite Obelisk of Theodosius, the Walled Obelisk and the Spiral Column.

Next, stop by at the Blue Mosque or the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, a historic 17th Century Mosque lined with exquisite handmade ceramic tiles, admirable stained glass windows, huge chandeliers and a finely carved and sculptured marble mihrab. After a respectful tour, proceed to the Grand Covered Bazaar or the Grand Bazaar, one of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets, with a footfall of about 400,000 visitors on any given day. With 5000 shops sprawled across 60 covered streets, the Grand Bazaar has been a shopping enthusiast’s slice of heaven since the 15th Century.

Shop for gold and silver jewellery, hand painted ceramics, carpets, antiques, lanterns, clothes, shoes, leather products, spices and much more. Keep a lookout for its exquisite architecture and eye-catching interiors.

Later, return to your hotel. No other activities are planned for the day, leaving you free to relax, reminiscence over the day’s happenings, or set out again to explore the Grand Bazaar or other attractions.

Early in the morning, we arrive at Ankara, the capital of Turkey and its second largest city. Upon arrival at Antara, enjoy breakfast and then set out to explore the city. Visit the Anatolian Civilisations Museum and trace your steps through Anatolia’s history in chronological order.

See 2nd Millennium BC baked-clay tablets from world’s oldest and wealthiest marketplace; Hittite figures of bulls and stags; incredible inlaid wooden furniture and lion- and ram-head ritual vessel from Phrygia; terracotta figures of gods in human form; and a 9.8-million-year-old Ankarapithecus (a 30kg, fruit-eating primate). Sculptures, reliefs, statues, wall paintings and coins from the earliest civilizations including Catalhoyuk, the Neolithic village dating back to 6500 BC are also on display.

Later, visit the Mausoleum of Ataturk, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the leader of the Turkish War of Independence who went on to become the founder and First President of the Republic of Turkey. A listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cappadocia encompasses villages, underground towns and traditional human habitats dating back to the 4th Century. Visit Pigeon Valley – a unique valley with a landscape marked with Fairy Chimneys that have birdhouses at the top. Next, stop at the natural citadel of Uchisar or the Uchisar Castle, a magnificent multi-tiered castle burrowed out from the rocks of Uchisar hill before proceeding to the Goreme Open-Air Museum.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Goreme Open-Air Museum is a cluster of churches, chapels and monasteries carved into cave rocks renowned for their artwork, especially frescoes and wall paintings. The 4th Century Monastery caves in themselves are full of pink, rose and white tapering columns, some of which curve and twist, and some are tall like fairy chimneys.

Stop for lunch at a typical restaurant of the region before continuing the tour; visit Kaymakli Underground City, the widest and one of the largest underground cities in Cappadocia with multiple levels, over a hundred tunnels, vertical shafts for ventilation, carved rooms for storage of produce, wineries and more.
