Day 02: Pilgrimage Tour of Churches of Mumbai

The Christian pilgrimage tour begins today with a tour of the most important churches of Mumbai. Our first stop will be at the Mount Mary Church in Bandra, which is also known as the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount. It is devoted to Virgin Mary and a statue depicting her with Baby Jesus, dating back to the 16th Century finds a place of honour in this Basilica.

The Mount Mary Church is also believed to have miraculous healing powers and all who pray here have their wishes granted, making it an important stop on Christian pilgrimage tours. The basilica is also renowned as home to the famous week-long Bandra Fair. The Bandra Fair is a celebration that begins with the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, the Virgin Mary, on the first Sunday that falls after September 8.

Our next stop will be at St. Thomas' Cathedral, the first Anglican Church in Mumbai and one of the oldest churches in India. Dating back to the late 17th century, the church was built at one of the gates of the East India Company's fort, giving the area the name Churchgate. Today, the St. Thomas Cathedral is full of beautiful memoirs from the colonial era.

The Christian pilgrimage tour in Mumbai continues with a stop at the Church of St. John the Evangelist in South Mumbai and thereon to Flora Fountain. The Church of St. John the Evangelist is also known as the Afghan Church and was commissioned by the British in remembrance of the soldiers who laid down their lives in the First Afghan War. We will also visit the Crawford Market, one of the most famous markets in Mumbai and Marine Drive, a C-shaped coastal boulevard that offers exquisite views of the sea.

Day 04: Tour of Churches in Goa

On Day 4 of this Christian Pilgrimage Tour, we will tour the churches in Goa. We will begin our tour with a visit to the Basilica of Bom Jesus, the first minor Basilica in India. The Basilica holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier and is adorned with paintings depicting scenes from his life.

The main altar has a large statue of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. He is seen protecting a tiny figure of Infant Jesus. The Basilica of Bom Jesus is the only basilica in India that is void of a plastered exterior. Despite being in ruins, the basilica is famous with tourists as well as Christian pilgrims.

The Christian Pilgrimage Tour continues to the Se Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals in Asia and home to one of the largest Golden Bells in the world. The Golden Bells are named such due to their rich tone.

The pilgrimage tour then continues on to the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, which is located just adjacent to the Se Cathedral. Though not in use for worship now, the Church of St. Francis of Assisi is renowned for its beautiful interiors and is a popular spot for both regular tourists and Christian pilgrims.

We will also visit the Our Lady of The Immaculate Conception Church, one of the most beautiful churches in Goa and the church with the second largest bell in Goa. Our Christian pilgrimage tour concludes with a stop at the Church of Mae de Deus, a church with one of the classiest neo-Gothic architecture in Goa. The church is also renowned for its exquisite gold-painted statue of Mae de Deus or Mother of God.

The Church of Mae de Deus has the distinction of having as many as 6 altars in addition to the main altar. The sub-altars are dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Christ the Redeemer, the Sacred Heart of Mary, St. Francis Xavier, Our Lady of Assumption and Our Lady of Piety.

The altar of Christ the Redeemer holds the Blessed Sacrament consecrated by the Patriarch Dom Antonio Valente during his pastoral visit in 1883. The altar of St. Francis Xavier holds the image of St. Bonaventure, which was brought here from the College of St. Bonaventure in Old Goa.

Later, we will return to the hotel.

Day 06: Tour of Churches in Kochi - Kochi Sightseeing Tour

On Day 6 of this Christian Pilgrimage Tour, we will proceed on a tour of the churches in Kochi, beginning with a stop at the St. Francis Church, the oldest European Church in India and the place, where the famous Explorer Vasco da Gama was interred before his remains were transferred to Lisbon, Portugal.

We will also visit the Basilica of the Lady of Ransom, which was bestowed with the status of a National Pilgrim Centre in 1951. It is believed that the famous painting of the Lady of the Ransom at the Basilica has bestowed many miracles. The belief is so strong that local fishermen bring their boats to get it blessed before taking them out to sea for the first time.

The last church that we visit in Kochi on this Christian Pilgrimage Tour is the St. George's Syro Malabar Forane Church. A prominent pilgrimage centre for Christians and non-Christians alike, the St. George's Syro Malabar Forane Church attracts offerings such as gold and chicken from believers who wish to be protected from evil spirits, ghosts, reptiles and diseases. Many believers also get their new vehicles blessed at the church as soon as they buy them.

Later, we will enjoy a sightseeing tour of Kochi, visiting famous landmarks such as the Chinese Fishing Nets and Maritime Museum.

Day 07: Flight to Chennai

Today, we will board our flight to Chennai, the next stop on this Christian Pilgrimage Tour. A Jetways representative will receive you at the airport and escort you to a pre-booked hotel. En-route, we will stop for a tour of the St. Thomas Mount National Shrine.

As the name suggests, St. Thomas Mount is a National Shrine and an important stop for Christians on a pilgrimage tour. This is where St. Thomas was martyred while praying before a cross that he had personally chiselled. The cross is believed to have bled blood on numerous occasions; the first time was on 18th December 1558 and last was in 1704.

There have been many reports of miraculous cures by the cross, which has further strengthened the belief of visiting the St Thomas Mount on Christian pilgrimage tours. The church is also renowned for its painting of Madonna of the Blessed Virgin, which is attributed to St. Luke the Evangelist.

According to legend, Thomas was away when the Virgin died and was very disturbed when he couldn't see her for one last time. He even got her tomb opened but could not find her - the body had been miraculously removed. To comfort him, St. Luke painted a portrait of the Virgin and St. Thomas carried this painting with him wherever he went. This painting of Madonna of the Blessed Virgin is considered to be one of the oldest and most venerated of all paintings in India.

St. Thomas the Mount National Shrine also has a fragment of the bone of St. Thomas in a beautiful casket. Like the cross, the painting of Madonna of the Blessed Virgin and the bone of St. Thomas too have numerous miracles attributed to it.

On Day 8 of this Christian Pilgrimage Tour, we will embark on a tour of the other important Churches in Chennai.

We will visit the Armenian Church, the only Armenian Church in Chennai, where the Armenian population has dwindled to none. Services are held here only once a year. A unique feature of the Armenian Church is its bell tower with 6 bells - all made in London and weighing about 150 kg each. Another distinguishing feature is the portrait of Virgin Mary taking infant Jesus to heaven.

Our next stop on this Christian Pilgrimage Tour will be at the St. Mary's Cathedral Church. The oldest Anglican Church and the oldest British building in India, the St. Mary's Cathedral Church was the only bomb-proof building in the country at that time. Its Altar Piece is a depiction of the Last Supper painting and though the church is dedicated to Mother Mary, many believers visit it to pray in front of the miraculous statue of St. Anthony.

Later on, our Christian pilgrimage tour continues to the St. George's Cathedral, the Mother Church of the Diocese of Madras, Church of South India. The last church of Chennai that we visit on this pilgrimage tour is the Santhome Cathedral, which is also known as the International Shrine of Saint Thomas Cathedral Basilica due to its positioning right atop the tomb of St Thomas. The Cathedral also has an underground tomb chapel, which His Holiness Pope John Paul II visited and prayed at, while on his visit in 1986.

Before returning home, if time permits, we will visit the Marina Beach, the second longest city beach in the world, to enjoy the cool evening breeze.
